VHF systems for short range communications, typically 20-50NM, used for GMDSS safety communications with Digital Selective Calling (DSC), intership communications and public correspondence with or without DSC. Fixed VHF Handheld VHF Marine Fixed VHF systems are used for short range communications covering 20-50NM, either for GMDSS safety communications using Digital Selective Calling (DSC) or for routine inter-ship or public correspondence communications with or without DSC. Handheld VHF systems are largely used for on-board communications or with shore whilst in port, covering a range of 1-3NM.
